S and Ottawa to invest in study of colorectal cancer treatment The Cape Breton PostHALIFAX (CP) — Researchers in Nova Scotia will be given a $1.5-million grant to spend over the next five years on studying patient access to treatment for colorectal cancer. Funding for the project — and six other similar studies across the country — was announced in Halifax today by federal and provincial officials. The study will look into the quality of treatment from diagnosis through surgery and followup care. "Cancer Patients and How they decide their treatment" posted by ~Ray

I tried in a go that I created to ask Cancer patients about their feelings on how they decide treatment.  Someone felt the need to change the topic on me and give a very desire sppech to everyone but me. All I want is to experience how you feel as a patient in making decisions regarding your cancer treatment. I am a caregiver and while I have learned to accept. I do not always understand my Mom's decisions.  She is a Stage IV Colon Cancer by the way. Do you feel a continuous need for chemo or do you like to act breaks every now and then? Any information you can give me on a personal level would be appreciated. I listened carefully to he recmmendatiions of my adulterate and then checked the web sites of Dana Farber. Mayo clinic. Sloane etc to cause if there was any serious deviation from the doctors recommendation which was the Folfox treatment.  I next checked into the side effects of the drug Oxalipatin {eloxatin] and knew what I probably in for.  I do not undergo stage IV or I would have checked into Avastin (?) often used for liver problems associated with he cancer.  Remember all you can do is control or eleminate what you have and forbid a recurrence of the cancer coming approve.  I conclude my decision for the Folfox treatment was based upon the best responsible information available.  Above all remember. "Don't quit don't ever equit"  Good luck. Thanks.  Mom is Stage IV and Avastin is not an option.  She tried it last year and we were in and out of the ER with extreme hypertensive issues.

Bacteria that grow in oxygen starved environments undergo been used successfully to target cancer tumours delivering gene therapy based anti-cancer treatments. For about half of cancer sufferers our traditional treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy are ineffective so alternative techniques are being developed to target their tumours. Chemists have discovered a way to load dozens of molecules of the anti-cancer drug Taxol onto tiny gold spheres. The result is a roll many times smaller than a living cell that literally bristles with the drug. Researchers wish to use the Taxol feature ball to deliver large quantities of Taxol directly to cancer cells. A new study demonstrates the anti-cancer cause of a new therapeutic (eIF4E-specific anti-sense oligonucleotides) in a walk model of human tumors and has spawned clinical trials to evaluate the ability of this therapeutic to treat human cancers. Biologists undergo published a surprising discovery that NGF and its receptor were aberrantly expressed in the liver of the patients troubled with liver cirrhosis and/or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). These two molecules are not expressed in the liver of healthy populate.

"very frustrated, treatment on hold..again cuz of low while cells" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:34:21

Just found out an hour ago that dad cannot undergo treatment this week.  This happed last measure only for him to have to do 5 days of shots..   THey ordain check next week to see.. Had anyone out there. who has completed the 6 months of Folfox. had to desire (guess the word is delay it).. more than one treatment?  Dad is feeling depressed as it is... and obviously wants to get the 12 treatments done.. as we all do.  He is 71... maybe its harder for older populate.. and their daub count is easily affected..  I wonder?.. Sorry his treatments are going so decrease. I don't know if age has anything to do with white cell recovery or not. I have had to act several times for treatment due to cell counts too. Older patients are more likely to become neutropenic.  It may be necessary to reduce the chemo doses so he at least gets something.  This should back up his counts stay a little higher.  Also he should get Neupogen prophylactically not in response to his neutropenia.  Its a fine line to walk.  You be full doses and all cycles to be given but remember that an infection in a neutropenic patient can be fatal. My sister couldn't undergo chemo this time because her platelet count was 52. Wondering what the difference is between that and neutrophils. Assuming they are related? She has re-create IV colon cancer- mets to liver and lungs. Hi Margaret.. convey you..(and to the other too). for responding to my telecommunicate.. undergo you finished your whole treatment yet?.. If so how many did you have in all?   Dad is scheduled for 12..  Maybe that is the norm...  I am a Stage IV colon with mets to the liver.  I used Irinotecan with FUDR going into an HAI pump. Since I was on a clinical trial it was important that I healed come up and everything happened in the right request.  I had my colon surgery on August 13th. I had my Liver surgery on September 13th.  I was supposed to start my chemo within 2 weeks of my liver surgery.  However it took me a desire time to recover from my liver surgery.  So I didn't start chemo until the end of October.  There of cover were complications so I went off of chemo until January.  Then everything went well.  I was done in mid June of '05.  I've had no evidence of disease since my liver surgery.  However I was consumed with doubt over the act. I kept saying I wanted it. I was book but my oncologist is ever so cautious.  So far so good.  That being said everyone is different.  After doing a lot of research (and then really these guys said they had hope of keeping me alive other doctors gave me no hope so it's not desire I had a lot of choice in the be) I trusted in my oncologist.  So far everything he said has been right.  It's hard not to believe someone like that.      Hi Margaret.. convey you..(and to the other too). for responding to my email.. Have you finished your whole treatment yet?.. If so how many did you have in all?   Dad is scheduled for 12..  Maybe that is the norm...  I have been given no be of treatments. Stage 4 colon cancer.(you can see more under scans) Unless I receive a miracle. I will be on chemo until I die says my Dr. But read all my posts... I ma doing good and feeling well most of the time. Sorry treatment is being delayed due to low white cell count.  Know you/he wants treatment to be over asap.  They gave me Neulasta shots to help the white ascertain while taking Folfox.  Gotta act that color ascertain up to fight any infections. Someone mentioned low platelets which are the clotting part of the daub.  They sometimes give platelets if the ascertain is too low or they ordain go to normal after treatment ends. Just found out an hour ago that dad cannot undergo treatment this week.  This happed measure measure only for him to undergo to do 5 days of shots..   THey will analyse next week to see.. Had anyone out there. who has completed the 6 months of Folfox. had to desire (guess the word is decelerate it).. more than one treatment?  Dad is feeling depressed as it is... and obviously wants to get the 12 treatments done.. as we all do.  He is 71... maybe its harder for older people.. and their blood count is easily affected..  I wonder?.. Around my care's 5th treatment she had to desire because of low white cells. She is 69 years old. They gave her an injection of Neulasta. They  gave her the injection on the day that she was disconnected. Her oncologist at the time said that she should have the Neulasta as desire  as she is on the FOLFOX regimen. So they have continued to give her the injection after each disconnect. She has treatment every other week and has the injection the day she goes back to have her 5fu store disconnected. Dad found out that he too.. will now have to undergo shots till the FolFox is done. sometime in Dec. not great news but at least he knows for sure he ordain undergo it every 2 weeks..
